It may still be summer but one of my favourite movies of the summer so far has been Mortal Kombat II.
Taking what made the first one fun, the sequel, as all good sequels should, made the world bigger and added loads more to the mythology and plot. Also, it added Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, which is automatically a step up.
But, despite all this, there’s no denying that the movie didn’t explode the box office as hoped… it might be because it was R-rated, maybe because it released too early, maybe it was because the first movie was a big hit on streaming due to covid, but whatever happened, the sequel didn’t deliver at the box office as it was expected to.
In a new interview, when asked about the third movie and if it’s happening, McQuoid said: “I think it’s still going through its life cycle, so I don’t know yet. I’m not sure.”
Going on, it seems the director is already preparing to move on to other things: “I feel like there are other stories that I want to tell that aren’t necessarily in Mortal Kombat and I have multiple things in development, one of which we’re just casting now and that’s not Mortal Kombat at all, something that is in the real world and very much a deep dive into a singular character and character study. I’m excited about it. But I never want to close doors. I’m just always trying to open doors.”

We know that, before it stalled at the box office, Warner Bros and New Line were very happy with MKII and had even brought on Screenwriter Jeremy Slater to pen the third movie; heck, there was talk of spinoffs and all sorts, but this would seem to suggest that the franchise dream is now just that, a dream.
Personally, I really liked the first two movies and had a blast with them both and was stoked for the third movie, so this is bad news, although we still don’t know for sure if it’s dead in the water… but, as the saying goes, my spider-sense is tingling.
