DIsney+ (finally) developing sequel to The Rocketeer

September 19th, 2021 by Marc Comments

We’ve been reporting for over six years that Disney was developing a sequel to Joe Johnston’s 1991 classic The Rocketeer (here) and, while we got original movie star Billy Campbell to lend his voice to a kids’ Rocketeer series (here), we’d pretty much given up on ever seeing the story carried on in any meaningful way.

And it seems we were wrong.

Disney+ is developing The Return of the Rocketeer, a new movie set in the same world as the first movie but with an all-new cast of actors.

The movie is being developed by David and Jessica Oyelowo and will be written by Now You See Me and Jessica Jones writer Ed Ricourt with Star Wars: Rebels and Interstellar star David Oyelowo potentially starring.

The story will focus ‘on a retired Tuskegee airman who takes up the Rocketeer mantle’.

We’ve waited a long time to get another chapter in The Rocketeer story and we love Oyelowo, left, and hope that, while undoubtedly there will be a political slant to the story, it remembers to retain the fun, swashbuckling tone of the original which had Timothy Dalton as an Errol Flynn-esque villain who was a Hollywood star working for the Nazis.

It was perfect… we hope this one lives up to the legacy.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
