Edgar Wright explains why he’ll not be making a Shaun of the Dead sequel

October 5th, 2021 by Marc Comments

You may recall earlier this year we wrote an article on the Shaun of the Dead sequel that almost was after it was thought up by director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg (here).

“I jokingly wrote a treatment for From Dusk Till Shaun,” Pegg says.

“Which was a sequel to Shaun of the Dead. It was all about Shaun and Ed having to go up to Edinburgh, or something. I don’t know. It was ridiculous. And it was a joke. It wasn’t like a serious pitch. Edgar thought it would be funny to do the film again, but with vampires. But it was all just pub talk.”

Eagle-eyed fans will have noticed the movie popped up in Times Square in Into the Spider-verse, left.

However, talking to SFX Magazine about his upcoming Last Night in Soho (here), Wright finally explained why the movie never happened and likely never will – at least not with him helming.

“I haven’t gone back to horror-comedy, because with Shaun Of The Dead I felt like I had said much of what I wanted to say with that movie. It’s difficult to return to that, even as a producer.

“Sometimes I get sent films – people want to make the next Shaun and want me to come aboard as a producer. But I find it difficult to cover the same territory again,” Wright, right, continued.

He goes on to explain that movies take too long to do and the idea of repeating himself for something that will take up a lot of time and he has covered before, just isn’t appealing: “It’s like, these films take three years to make, you’ve got to really, really love it to do it.”

Two things interesting here is that, even as a producer, he doesn’t want to revisit the world of Shaun and Ed. Also… people keep sending him treatments for a sequel?! Who are these people?

Personally, I adore Shaun, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End (the so-called Cornetto Trilogy) and, along with TV series Spaced, I believe Wright, Pegg and Nick Frost have left their imprint on society and there’s really no need to go back home.

But.. I’d love to see Shaun’s world explored in maybe a game or comic series. Or, obviously, a movie, but only if all parties are up to return.

Thoughts? Let me hear them…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
