If you love stop motion animation as much as we do, then this could be the news to make your night, as animation house Mackinnon & Saunders has revealed the first look at their next movie, Heads.
The movie, which looks gorgeous from that one shot (above), will be 80 minutes long and, according to the official description, is set in a retro-futuristic world where severed human heads can live independently from their bodies.
A Corporation has convinced the poor to sell their heads to enrich the wealthy, creating a grotesque society built on inequality and self-sacrifice. The fantasy/adventure/horror/drama follows two disparate women bound by their uncanny connection as they fight to reclaim their bodily autonomy.
While you may not know the name Mackinnon & Saunders, you will certainly know their work from classic movies such as Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie, and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox.
According to the producers, the movie’s look is based on ‘Manchester’s industrial heritage and history of innovation,’ which might explain why the movie is being made there.
Writer/director Tiffany Kimmel said of the movie: “Dark fantasy has always given us a way to explore and understand the world by imagining it as something stranger.
The Pacific Rim story gets official sequel/ending in new graphic novel limited series
“With Heads, we are building a stop-motion universe that is gothic, satirical, absurd yet emotionally grounded. This is a story for teens and adults that explores bodily autonomy and inequality through a lens that is as unsettling as it is wondrous. We are creating the kind of animated feature film that audiences carry with them for years: visually distinctive, evocative, and unapologetically original.”
We’ll be keeping an eye out for further developments on this one, that’s for sure.
Thoughts? I know you have them, and I wanna hear ’em all.
Heads is set for a summer 2029 release.
