Ghostbusters Day 2021 round-up: All the news, images and details from the biggest day of the year for Ghostheads

June 9th, 2021 by Marc Comments

So, we’ve come out from the other side of Ghostbusters Day 2021 which was yesterday, June 8th and, while we didn’t get the second trailer – which many of us believed we would – we did get some very fun Ghostbusters stuff.

So, without further ado, let’s get to all the bustin’ goodness we got yesterday.

First up, before everything kicked off, Sony got everyone ready with the new logo which is surrounded by the new mini-Stay Puft Marshmallow Men:

It certainly seems the mini Stay Pufts are going to be a big part of the marketing of this movie… we’ll have more on them in a minute.

Next up, original two movies’ director Ivan Reitman took over the official Ghostbusters Twitter for the day…

You can watch the new sign being presented to the iconic Ghostbusters HQ, Hook and Ladder 8 in NYC here:

With more images etc here:

Next up, Reitman and Peter Venkman himself, Bill Murray had a special message for all the fans for Ghostbusters Day 2021:

I love how bemused Murray is by the idea that there’s a Ghostbusters Day… the man is really so humble! How could you not love him?

I have a funny feeling this was pre-recorded on the same day they recorded the footage of Murray seeing the Mini-Stay Pufts (told you they’d be back – and there’s more later) which you can watch here.

Reitman also has his exclusive GB Day 2021 teeshirt – which is tasty:

Don’t worry, there’s more mini-Stay Pufts coming.

Around this time Janine Melnitz herself, the lovely Annie Potts took to social media to wish the late Harold Ramis – Egon in the movies – an emotional happy Ghostbusters Day:

We’re not crying, you’re crying.

Ok, so next up, it was revealed that the very cool Plasma Series Ghostbuster figures, well of the four GBs anyway, were getting a re-release (expected in October) and this time they’ll have cool glow-in-the-dark proton streams and slime on them. They really do look great:

But that wasn’t all the action figure goodness as it was later revealed that the mini-pufts are getting a live-sized (3.5 inch) figure release! Click here for more images of the little guys.

The Mini-Pufts are out of the bag and looking to make massive amounts of mischief.

Director/writer Jason Reitman shared a fun little video focusing on Spatial Reality Display which is a revolutionary new software that allows creatives to see and adjust scenes and worlds they’re creating:

One of the highlights of the night was the release of new image from the movie, including the first look at young actress Celeste O’Connor in the movie – she’s wearing a red and white baseball shirt in the images below and it seems her character is called Lucky.

We also learned that Logan Kim’s character has the curious name of Podcast… we’re not sure how that fits into the narrative but the Twitter Spaces chat with the cast of the movie revealed that his character is one of the movie’s true ghost-believers.

So, that leaves the main cast as: Mckenna Grace as Phoebe, Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, Carrie Coon as Callie, Paul Rudd as Mr Grooberson, Logan Kim as Podcast, Celeste O’Connor as Lucky.

Ok, so here’s the new images:

I have to say that I love the contrasting images of the Ecto-1 in the images above and am I the only one thinking the old Spengler farmhouse might be haunted? Come on… wouldn’t it make sense Ego retired in a haunted house? Anyway, I love the haunted house feel of this shot with the Mystery Machine, sorry Ecto-1, parked outside.

While the Twitter Spaces event didn’t reveal too much about the movie that we didn’t know, here’s a couple of choice bits of info:

On his idea for the movie, writer/director Jason Reitman said: “I saw a young girl in the middle of a field with a proton pack and I imagined a young man discovering the Ecto-1 and it not working, and then Tokyo drifting through that field.”

His dad, Ivan, revealed that he was delighted that his son is bringing the Ghostbusters back to the world: “It’s the greatest honor and greatest thrill you can have as a parent to have one of your children carry on a story you began. It’s nothing but a thrill.”

While we have heard many rumours that the movie’s climax will take place in New York City, Jason Reitman at one point said that none of the movie happens in the location of the other movies: “We wanted to go somewhere new. This film had to get out of the city and it had to be about a family discovering who they were.”

So, there you have it. If you were busy last night and wishing to catch up on the Ghostbusters goodness we got, then we have you now officially up-to-date. If we missed anything let us know and, in the meantime, are you excited for Afterlife? Let me know your thoughts…

When a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.
Afterlife‘s cast includes Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife hits cinemas on November 12th 2021. Hopefully.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
