With us all at FTN excited or the coming or Roland of Gilead, the Gunslinger from Stephen King’s masterpiece series, The Dark Tower, we’re waiting patiently to see who will play the role.

And with news that Matthew McConaughey was attached to the movie, we reckon it’s a safe choice he’ll be the villainous Randall Flagg (here) so who will play Roland?

In the books Roland is clearly modelled on Clint Eastwood’s Man With No name and, in the past, actors like Viggo Mortensen and Javier Bardem have been rumoured in the role. But now it seems a new actor has emerged as the favourite.

Yes, it seems that Idris Elba is now the frontrunner to play the Gunslinger.

Roland could certainly do with the Luthor (Elba’s famous TV persona) attitude and he has the physical presence to play him, however Roland was always written as an older, white man, so the casting is unexpected but as we said, we could certainly see Elba’s presence in the role.

Let us know what you think, guys.

Director Nikolaj Arcel, who co-wrote the Swedish version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and directed A Royal Affair will direct the first movie while Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner are writing the screenplay which covers the first of eight books in King’s series. A TV series is in development to run alongside the movie(s).

The Dark Tower is currently set for release on January 13, 2017.
