Here’s one that needs a little explaining…
Spyglass Media Group and Hulu are developing a Hellraiser reboot and it will, once again, feature the Cenobite Pinhead.
However, while Pinhead was made famous by actor Doug Bradley, this time out it will be Generation Q actress Jamie Clayton who will play the iconic role.
Now… I know what you’re thinking… this is more change for change’s sake BUT no, it may not be.
See, the Hellraiser movies came from Clive Barker’s original novel The Hellbound Heart and in that book the Cenobites were not as obviously male or female as they are in the movie and, indeed, it seems that the casting of a female in the role makes more sense as in the novel the Cenobites are extremely androgynous, with Pinhead’s description reading: “Its voice… was light and breathy, the voice of an excited girl. Every inch of its head had been tattooed with an intricate grid and at every intersection of horizontal and vertical axes a jeweled pin driven through to the bone. Its tongue was similarly decorated.”
So, it seems the new movie may differ from the movies but be closer to the original novel. Indeed, in the novel, Pinhead wasn’t even the leader of the Cenobites.
Indeed, Barker is involved in the movie as a producer.
“This is a Hellraiser on a scale that I simply didn’t expect. David and his team are steeped in the story’s mythology, but what excites me is their desire to honour the original even as they revolutionize it for a new generation,” said Barker.
Director David Bruckner said: “It’s been such an honor to have Clive onboard to help support and shepherd us through the incredible universe he created so long ago. Combined with a fearless and committed cast, including the amazing Jamie Clayton, who fully embodies the role as the Hell Priest, we’re aiming to create a very special new chapter in the Hellraiser legacy.”
Joining Clayton will be Brandon Flynn (13 Reasons Why, Ratched), Goran Visnjic (The Boys, ER), Drew Starkey (Outer Banks, Love, Simon), Adam Faison (Everything’s Gonna Be Okay, Into the Dark), Aoife Hinds (Normal People, Anne Boleyn) and Hiam Abbass (Blade Runner 2049, Succession).
Let me know your thoughts on this one, folks…
