Henry Cavill learns that he was all but cast as James Bond… but for one small thing

February 11th, 2024 by Marc Comments

We all know that the casting of the next James Bond is always a big deal and we also know that in recent years, Idris Elba and Henry Cavill have both been fan favourites for the gig and now we know that one of these guys came perilously close to putting on the tux.

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn and star Henry Cavill have been doing the press circuit for the movie and Vaughn has revealed that Cavill was almost the next James Bond but lost out very narrowly to Daniel Craig and it certainly seems to hint that, if he jumps back in the ring, Cavill may actually become the next Bond.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter, Instagram, Youtube, Bluesky,
Truth, Tumblr, Threads & Mastodon!

“When Henry was auditioning for Bond, I was at Pinewood [Studios], and Daniel [Craig] was as well, at the same time, and I’d go off and meet with Daniel and he’d say what’s going on,” Vaughn reveals in the interview.

“He says there’s this young guy Henry Cavill I think they’re seeing as well. And…we hadn’t done Stardust yet… but that’s how you came into my radar. I was thinking, well who’s this guy who got down to the last two for Bond? So that’s how I discovered you.”

Fortuitous for Vaughn perhaps, but given Argylle’s reception – I, personally, really liked it – it would definitely have been a better result for Cavill.

“I know that the director preferred your audition, but Barbara [Broccoli] preferred Layer Cake,” Vaughn continues, “and they decided you were too young. And I probably shouldn’t have said that, but [Eon] aren’t that keen on me anyway, so what have I got to lose? But he would be excellent. But it’s unfair for him to discuss about a project that he might be involved with or not and ruin it because of a question.”

Too young? As we all know, Craig’s tenure as Bond ended with 2021’s No Time To Die and very soon – if not already – the search for a new Bod will begin with Cavill now being 40, it puts him at the perfect age for the role of the slightly past his prime but still the best around, James Bond.

I really like Cavill as an actor and as a person in real life as they say, but I’m not entirely convinced he has the clout to be Bond but I wasn’t entirely sold on Craig in the role either and that turned out pretty damned well… that said, I could see Cavill’s take on the super spy as being the love child of Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan and honestly, the more I write, the more I’m convincing myself that they need to hire him.
