Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh has teased a third Trainspotting outing… but no one’s sure if it’s a book, a movie, or just a bit of banter.
Taking to social media, the Scottish writer posted an image of a poster reading: “Renton is back, Spud is back, Begbie is back, Sick Boy is back.”
These roles were played by Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, and Robert Carlyle in Danny Boyle’s iconic 1996 movie, which launched the careers of all of them, as well as Kelly MacDonald. However, the book was published in 1993 and so far has had three sequels, while the movie has only had one, which came out in 2017 and was fairly underwhelming.

So, you can understand why there is some confusion about whether this is Welsh bigging up a new book or a new movie.
All the principal cast have said they would return to the roles if there was a good reason and story to tell, a sentiment echoed by Boyle too.
I guess in the coming weeks and months, we’ll learn what exactly Welsh is telling us, but for now, maybe it’s time to revisit the first movie.
Thoughts? I know you have them, and I wanna hear ’em all.
