Uh-oh, it looks like the MCU is in danger of losing Spider-man once again…
Breaking news tonight is that MCU boss Kevin Feige will not be producing any more Spider-man movies as Sony and Disney are having a despute over the character.
So, Spider-man: Far From Home was Sony’s most successful movie of all-time without truly being an Sony movie as it was financed by Marvel.
But it seems that Sony – along with Venom and Into The Spider-verse – are potentially hoping to push ahead with Spider-man on their own terms as they currently have Tom Holland and director Jon Watts already signed on for two more movies.
This will mean that, should the MCU depart the picture, Sony will have taken the success of the Marvel Spider-man and used it to leapfrog into their own new franchise with Holland still in the lead.
It seems that Disney, unhappy with the current financial arrangement were pushing for a 50/50 split on Spider-man movies moving forward as at the minute they were financing the movie and taking very little profits, however Sony didn’t like that deal.
“Sony proposed keeping the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney refused.”
Apparently Sony did offer counter-offers but Disney wouldn’t wiggle.
UPDATE: Sony claims this dispute is simply over a producer credit and negotiations are ongoing.
Whatever happens, it doesn’t look good for Spidey in the MCU.
But whatever happens, we know that Sony has wanted to introduce Spider-man into their Venom movies with Andy Serkiss currently lined-up to direct and the writer of their planned Kraven: The Hunter movie was told to include Spider-man in the script.
So it looks that while Spider-man may not be in the MCU moving forward, we’ve definitely not seen the last of him or Tom Holland in the role for that matter.
Thoughts?
