Oh, please… please let this be a thing!
At LA Comic Con this past weekend Quantum Leap creator Donald Bellisario was taking about the chances of seeing more Quantum Leap and he dropped the massive bit of news: A movie could be a thing at some point.
Possibly.
Well, maybe.
Look, we’re hoping, ok?!
Anyway, Bellisario told the audience: “I just finished writing a Quantum Leap feature… I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, but I did write it.”
He was reluctant to give too much details away but it sounds like we could possibly see the return of Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell as Sam Beckett and Al Calavicci: “I write things exactly the same way. I just start writing and I let them take me wherever it’s going to take me. I’m entertained the same way the audience is. So I just put Scott and Dean [Stockwell] in my head, kind of rebooted them, and went from there.”
However, that could also mean he’s sold on a reboot.
Fans of the series will recall that in the series, which ran for four glorious years between 1989 and 1993, Sam was a scientist who found himself hurled through time, becoming people throughout history, changing events for the better throughout time. Al was stuck in the present time, helping Sam on his journey and working out what wrongs he had to fix. Throughout the series we waited for Sam to return home but in the last mind-bending episode it turned out that Sam had to fix a wrong Al’s life which meant that Sam would spend forever lost in time, helping the helpless. It was an emotional end to a series that blew fans’ minds and to this day causes many a tearful thread in online chatrooms and among fans.
“I was proud of that episode,” Bellisario said, “Everybody was.”
The thing is, we all felt that the Jake Gyllenhal movie Source Code worked as a Quantum Leap movie (it even had Bakula in a pretty awesome cameo), but if there was more of the Quantum Leap story to tell we’d sign up in a heartbeat.
We still really need Dr Sam Beckett to return home…
