So, we know now that James Gunn is officially the man who walks between worlds, having worked on Guardians of the Galaxy in the MCU and now stepping up to help direct DC moving forward with the new DCU, and it seems that he may have his sights set on a crossover between the two massive franchises in the future.
Many of us comic book nerdy types have dreamt of seeing the Avengers and the Justice League meeting on the big screen but, frankly, it’s always been an impossibility… or so it seemed.
However, Gunn has revealed that it’s a “possibility” now that he’s at DC.
“I think there’s always the possibility of that. I think that would be a fun thing for fans to see. But I do think it’s just about grounding the Marvel and DC universes right now and trying to make them each as strong as possible,” Gunn says, likely reflecting on his new role at DC and how important it is to clean the slate and get DC back on track after a very messy decade of movies.
He goes on: “Contrary to popular belief, a dollar for Marvel is not a dollar less for DC, quite the opposite. You make good Marvel movies, it brings people to theaters, and they go see more good DC movies. You make good DC movies, it brings them to the theater, and they go see good Marvel movies.”
It’s hard to argue with his reasoning here as it makes sense that if one thrives, it’s not a bad thing for the other. It’s not a new thing for Gunn to want to see this happen, as he said in 2021: “I’ve casually talked to the powers-that-be at both Marvel & DC about it. I would love for it to happen. I don’t think it’s likely, but I don’t think it’s an impossibility either.”
James Mangold confirms he’s set to write the DCU’s Swamp Thing movie
Gunn will be focusing his attention on bringing Superman to the big screen once more before he focuses on any crossovers… one thing at a time, eh?
Writing and directing Superman: Legacy, Gunn says: “I don’t think the movie would be worth making if it was just a redo of any other Superman adaptation… For us to truly thrive as a studio, we need to honor the past of these characters while simultaneously seeing them in a new light.”
The movie will not star Henry Cavill despite his return in Black Adam a few months ago but rather will see a new Superman – rumoured to be in his 20s – step into the red and yellow, kicking off the future of DC on the big screen and Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU Phase I.
Superman: Legacy is set for cinemas on July 11th, 2025.
