James Gunn: Yes, that is Adam Warlock’s cocoon in the Collector’s display…

August 6th, 2014 by Marc Comments

If there’s one thing Guardians of the Galaxy does – apart from greatly entertain – it’s set up the Marvel universe beyond anything you could have imagined when you watched Iron Man all those years ago.

And it seems that one of the rumours and nods that we picked up on at the end of Thor: The Dark World, but which was reinforced in guardians, was that Adam Warlock’s cocoon is in the Collector’s, em, collection (below), is true.

Speaking on the Empire magazine podcast, Gunn confirmed what we’ve suspected… but in confirming it, he sets up the possibilities of things to come in the Marvel movie universe. Speaking about he Collector’s artifacts he said: “There are the slither creature from my movie Slither behind The Collector, those guys are pretty obvious. You have Adam Warlock’s cocoon, you have all sorts of other characters from Marvel movies.”

So, let the speculation about ‘is it?’ turn to ‘what will this mean?’

well, we’ll let our friends, the Nerd Bastards, explain why Adam is so important:

“Adam Warlock, a virtually perfect human, was created by scientists who called themselves The Enclave. After turning on his creators and fighting the God of Thunder himself, Thor, Warlock decided to head to space to see what’s going on out there. After saving Counter-Earth, the Soul Gem is bestowed upon him. For those that haven’t read the comics, the Soul Gem is one of the Infinity Gems, which are referred to as Infinity Stones in the Marvel movies. He meets up with Gamora and a future version of himself who was driven insane by the power of the Gem. Lots of great, terrible stuff happens, which eventually leads to Warlock defeating Thanos and, eventually, gaining possession of the Infinity Gauntlet. So, what’s that cocoon thing? Well, anytime Warlock needs to be “reborn”, he goes into a cocoon to regenerate. And, that cocoon was empty in the final scene of Guardians of the Galaxy.

“So, if Thanos is the Big Bad in the MCU and all of the movies are leading to an Infinity Gauntlet themed Avengers 3, chances are that Adam Warlock will likely play a huge part. Is any of this guaranteed? Absolutely not. As a matter of fact, considering how closely to the vest Keven Feige and Co. like to play their cards, it may simply be misdirection in order to take the audience on a completely unexpected journey. The fact that we have seen the cocoon in two separate movies at this point, however, really lends itself to the theory (hope?) that the Infinity Gauntlet storyline is right around the corner.”

So, ultimately he’s the man (alien) to stop Thanos. And, just for the record, there’s rumours going around that in the movie universe he may well also prove to be the father of Peter Quill AKA Starlord. Hmmmmmmmm…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
