JJ Abrams talks about putting the mystery back into Star Wars

November 5th, 2013 by Marc Comments

OK, we know a lot of people are worried about the new Star Wars movies – truth be told, we at FTN  are too. It’s like sending your child out into the world, you hope for the best but can’t help but fear the worst. However, JJ Abrams certainly talks a good talk when it comes to the direction of Episode VII.

Talking to The Times, Abrams said that one of his focuses for the new movie is mystery. Sound good? Read on: “I loved how ‘Star Wars’ had that sense of a world far beyond the borders of what you can see and have been told. It’s one of the things it did so brilliantly.

If you watch the first movie, you don’t actually know exactly what the Empire is trying to do. They’re going to rule by fear – but you don’t know what their end game is.

You don’t know what Leia is princess of. You don’t yet understand who Jabba the Hutt is, even though there is a reference to him. You don’t know that Vader is Luke’s father, Leia is his sister – but the possibility is all there.

The beauty of that movie was that it was an unfamiliar world, and yet you wanted to see it expand and to see where it went.”

Well, that just sounds great… doesn’t it? Faith restored?

Well, if it is still flagging, Abrams referred to an online video when he talked about Episode VII: “I would say that [the video, below] a feeling that we share very much”.

Well, for better or for worse, we love the cut of his jib

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
