Joaquin Phoenix set to play Joker in standalone DC movie?

February 9th, 2018 by Marc Comments

Well, here’s the story that just won’t go away returning once again…

It seems that DC/Warners are still pushing ahead with their Joker origins standalone movie (as in not connected to the rest of the DC movies) and after it looking for ages like Leonardo DiCaprio was in line to play the character, it now seems that Gladiator star Joaquin Phoenix might play the Clown Prince of Crime.

The movie, to be written and directed by Todd Phillips, will be a completely separate movie from any other DC movie and may be the beginning of a route the studio will take, fragmenting the DC Cinematic Universe on the big screen. Phillips has said the Phoenix is his top choice for the role and word is that he has already agreed.

“Insiders stress that Jared Leto, who starred in “Suicide Squad” as the Joker is still on board as the character in the DC universe and that this Phoenix has no effect on what happens with Leto’s character in future DC films.”

The plan seems to be to keep the core DC Cinematic Universe alive and to have another ‘banner’ going too that will exist outside the core movies… a sort of cinematic Elseworlds if you will.

Phoenix was also reported close to playing Lex in Batman V Superman, so he’s not stranger to DC villains.

Honestly, we think this is a bad idea. We know there are already several DC universes between movies, TV shows, animated movies and more, but we honestly think that, if you’re going to the cinema to see a movie like this, it needs to be part of the movies that are already established.

Are we wrong? Let us know…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
