Ugh. Here we go. Again.
We all know that apparently Warners/DC are looking to create a banner for new movies based on characters that won’t be part of the main DC movies. And we all know that apparently this will begin with a movie based around Joker (here and here).
On top of that, word is that Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese is set to produce the story which will tell the origins of Joker who will be a young boy who can’t stop smiling and gets a hard time because of it and he’ll eventually become the world’s greatest villain (here).
And it’ll be directed by The Hangover’s Todd Phillips.
And now, the latest rumour is that, by bringing Scorses on board, the studio really wants… Leonardo DiCaprio in the role.
It’s been known that DiCaprio has been a studio favourite ever since The Dark Knight and word is that (understandably) Jared Leto – the current Joker in the DC Cinematic Universe – isn’t happy about all of this.
Look, we’re calling bulls*#t on all of this, ok?
Firstly, DiCaprio is 42, only three years younger than Leto, so even if this WAS a plan at Warners, he’d never be the guy to play a younger version of Joker… although, we do admit to being curious about what he would do in the role.
We said originally about the Joker movie report that we reckon the whole thing is a misunderstanding and the Joker movie will, like The Killing Joke Graphic Novel and even like Ledger’s Joker’s origins in The Dark Knight, be a standalone venture in so much as Joker’s origins are fluid and no-one really knows what they are… we’d picture the movie playing out like The Ususal Suspects where we’re told a story and at the end we’re given a twist that calls everything into doubt.
Or maybe we’re just hopeful.
On top of this, the rumour that Ben Affleck will not be playing Batman in Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie is back too.
We’re sick of this madness! Is there someone out there being paid to create this stuff?!
Warners wants to branch off with stand-alone movies that are unconnected to that version of the DC world. The new movies will have non-traditional takes on the heroes and villains of DC, and hopefully, attract actors and filmmakers who don’t typically toil in the comic-book movie world. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is developing a Batman stand-alone that, according to sources, will not star Ben Affleck, who plays the caped crusader in the DC Universe movies (Warners and Affleck have denied he is being replaced). The plan is to launch a separate label for these projects to distinguish them from the rest of the DC films. (Warners executives are acutely aware of the risks of audience confusion.)
Affleck denied all this nonsense at SDCC in July (here), so we’re calling BS on all, ok?
Let us know what you all think… we know we’ll be glad to get the Batman movie out so all this madness can come to an end.
What do you all say?
