Jurnee Smollett confirms Black Canary movie in development at HBO Max

August 23rd, 2021 by Marc Comments

We reported last week that word was we were set for a Black Canary series on HBO Max with Birds of Prey star Jurnee Smollett set to reprise the role (here).

It seems we were half right as it’s not a series but rather a Black Canary movie.

The star herself took to Twitter (below), writing: “Guess the Canary is out of the cage! 🤪 So excited to finally embark on this adventure with my creative soul sis @MishaGreen”

Misha Green and Smullett have worked together before, with Green acting as writer and showrunner on Lovecraft Country, however, it’s unclear what role Green will be taking on the Black Canary movie.

What we do know is that Smollett will be reprising her role as Dinah Lance, AKA Black Canary, the role that she played in the pretty dire, though she was great in it, Birds of Prey movie.

At this stage we don’t know if we’ll see Margot Robbie back as Harley Quinn or any of the other cast from that movie but it’s likely we can’t rule anything out at this stage.

An exciting rumor currently states that the movie will introduce the DCEU’s version of Oliver Queen AKA Green Arrow, setting up a HBO Max Green Arrow movie and/or series.

The movie joins HBO Max’s impressive line-up of DC movies and shows including Constantine, Blue Beetle, Batgirl, GCPD and more.

No word on when we can expect to see the movie appear on the streaming service, but we’re already looking forward to the DCEU continuing to grow on the small and large screens.

Thoughts? We want to hear them all.
