Kevin Feige on Avengers 2 Roster and magic in Phase 3

March 6th, 2013 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

Marvel President Kevin Feige recently talked to SFX Magazine about their Cinematic Universe and where it’s headed. These guys are killing it with the scoops lately! It seems obvious that Phase 2 of the plan will be more in the cosmic realms of the universe. Even though Feige had previously stated that “cosmic” wouldn’t really be a fair description of Phase Two. Feige was asked whether “magic” would be a good description of Phase 3 to which he answered:

“I’m not looking at Phase One as grounded and Phase Two as cosmic and Phase 3 as magic. The films are all so eclectic and different from each other that you can’t overarchingly categorize them like that. If and when we enter the magic arena, it will be through Doctor Strange. Sure, obviously. And that’s to me what’s exciting about Doctor Strange.”

How’s that for a magic trick? Doctor Strange is finally going to happen! But when? Phase 2 of Marvel’s plan will end with The Avengers sequel, and Phase 3 will start with Ant-Man in late 2015. It would seem perfect to have Dr. Strange show up in Phase 3 wouldn’t it? When asked about director Joss Whedon’s recent statement to “go deeper, not bigger” with The Avengers 2, Feige replied:

“I don’t know exactly what he meant when he said “deeper”. But, similar to Iron Man 3, we’re not saying, “Now it’s gotta be even bigger and more aliens come and there’s a giant monster!” The most exciting thing to us about the Iron Man franchise is Tony Stark and his journey. The most exciting thing to us about the Avengers franchise is the interaction amongst those characters. It’s putting them in situations that you wouldn’t expect to see them in. It’s that kind of fun; and the relationships between the characters in the Avengers, which I loved. Almost whatever the heck else is happening is gravy in that franchise, because all I care about is Bruce and Tony, Tony and Steve, Widow and Bruce – and how Thor fits into it, because he’s always the outsider amongst outsiders. So I think that’s where the value lies. And going deeper amongst those characters in those relationships.”

We still don’t really know what to expect in the next Avengers film, but both Feige and Whedon have said that we can expect to see new Marvel heroes added to the roster. I believe the only one brought up so far is Falcon, who will be played by Anthony Mackie in the Cap sequel. So next time we see The Avengers team up on the big screen we could also end up seeing characters such as Captain Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Black Panther, Iron Fist, or Luke cage. The list really goes on and on.

“I think it’s not a secret that Joss and I and all of us at Marvel think that part of the fun of Avengers is the rotating team, for sure [laughs].”

Marvel has done something that has never been done before with their Cinematic Universe, and I really hope they keep the momentum going forward. Especially with all the Justice League rumors going around.
