LEGO Batman director set for DC Cinematic Nightwing movie?

February 23rd, 2017 by Marc Comments

Holy awesome movie idea, Batman!

It looks like DC, who just confirmed that Cloverfield and Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves is helming the Batman movie after all, may have just rounded a corner on their cinematic path as tonight it seems they are now looking to get Chris McKay, who did a really fun job with The LEGO Batman Movie, to direct a Nightwing movie.

And we really think this could be an awesome idea!

So what’s the story? Well, in the comics Nightwing is former Robin and ward of Bruce Wayne’s, Dick Grayson. Grayson’s parents were killed and he was taken in by Wayne – his parents were acrobats (as was he) called The Flying Graysons, which explained why he was such a natural to fight alongside Batman.

He was the first Robin and when he grew to become a man he moved to become his own crime fighter and became Nightwing. After this, Batman took on a new ward, Jason todd, and Todd was a troubled boy and a difficult Robin and sadly was eventually killed by the Joker… this was of course hinted at in Batman V Superman when we see Bruce Wayne looking at the costume of a murdered Robin (below). It was also sort of revealed that this WAS Todd (here).

So what do we know? Well, DC are apparently planning a movie based on Nightwing and it is being written by The Accountant (which we loved!) scribe Bill Dubuque and after the success of LEGO Batman, McKay has proved his love for the characters as that movie was very much a (funny) Robin story… and a Dick Grayson story.

The Nightwing movie has been rumoured for a while now, with The Walking Dead’s Steven Yeun rumoured to be in consideration for the role (here). We could even see him being introduced in Reeves’ Batman movie and we’re wondering if we will see the full story of both Robin in the DCCU; we’re guessing we will.

We know it’s been bumpy for DC/Warners so far but don’t forget that at this stage Marvel only had Iron Man, Hulk and Iron Man 2, so it too was shaky on the ground at three movies in. We still have a lot of faith in this franchise.

Are we alone? Let us know your thoughts.
