Matthew Vaughn talks more Kingsman/King’s Man movies and teases the rise of Hitler story

It looks like fans of Matthew Vaughn’s King’s Man/Kingsman series are going to have plenty to look forward to in the next few years.

In a new interview, Vaughn revealed that 2021’s Kingsman prequel, The King’s Man, was originally set to be a TV series and the story isn’t over yet:

“The King’s Man was originally meant to be a TV series and I got persuaded to make it as a film,” the director says, “What we wanted to do was something like ‘The Crown’ but with espionage and a bit of a Kingsman hit going through all of the decades.”

Set decades before the modern day tales of the first two Kingsman movies starring Taron Egerton and Colin Forth as Eggsy and Harry Hart, The King’s Man gave us Ralph Fiennes’ Orlando who ran a spy operation that he wanted to use to try to stop wars to keep a promise he made to his late wife and it was very different animal as, unlike the James Bondesque first two movies, this tale was not reliant on high-tech devices and weapons.

“The next one is about the rise of Hitler,” Vaughn says of King’s Man 2, “and how Hitler did come to power and basically was supported by the English aristocracy.”

Fans will recall that Hitler was teased after the credits of The King’s Man.

“So I was like, ‘well that’s interesting’ and how the world was worrying so much about Communism, that Fascism rose up. And I look at the world at the moment, everyone getting distracted and worrying about this [and that] and if you worry too much about [this] bad things can happen here. So it is a story that I think needs to be recalled. We’re calling it The Traitor King.”

Vaughn also says that there’s the possibility the new movie might become a TV series as they’re having discussions about what way it’ll be told.

However, that’s not all.

Fans of Eggsy and Harry also have Kingsman: Blue Blood to look forward to and Vaughn hints that it will bring together all the movies in the series so far: “I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that’s what this movie is all about is will they or won’t they, let’s just say.”

He also says that fans might need to ensure they’ve seen The King’s Man before it comes out: “We’ve put seeds for what’s going to happen in ‘Kingsman 3’ all the way back into this. I know the storyline. The idea for the third one will blow everything you think you know about it out of the water.”

He also said that the third movie could be a smaller story: “There was a distorted coming-of-age, ‘My Fair Lady’ thing with that first film,” he said. “[Eggsy] was very much a kid. … Now it’s 10 years on, I’m 10 years older, so I’d want it to be a different kind of story. I’d want it to be about that character, as opposed to just about saving the world.”

So, at least two more entries in the Kingsman universe are on the horizon and I’m here for it all. Are you? Let me know.

Thoughts? I know you have them! Voice-off in the usual ways on FTN’s FacebookTwitter and Instagram
