It looks like Boardwalk Empire and Steve Jobs star Michael Stuhlbarg is set to make his comicbook movie debut in Doctor Strange.

The actor is rumoured to be very close to signing on to play Nicodemus West, a rival of Strange’s who operates on him after his accident in the comics and also travels to Tibet to learn about the ancient arts before leaving before his training was completed.

The movie will tell the story of Stephen Strange, a hotshot surgeon whose brilliant career is cut short when he injures his hands. In a desperate attempt to heal himself, he tries to use magic before eventually training to become the Sorcerer Supreme.

The movie will star Benedict Cumberbatch as Strange alongside Rachel McAdams as the female lead, Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One and Chiwetel Ejiofor and possibly Mads Mikkelsen; it will be directed by Scott Derrickson.
