No, no Power Rangers as sequels to the new movie now looks unlikely

Oh, Power Rangers… how did this happen?

The Power Rangers movie which hit in March was actually pretty fun (a lot of us thought more of it here at FTN than our reviewer Andrew) and we knew going in that there were plans to bring us more movies with a further five planned but it looks like that may never happen.

Forbes are now reporting that despite the movie’s strong opening with $40 million in its opening weekend, the movie only grossed $85 million in total on North American shores. However, it was believed that the movie would perform strong overseas however it didn’t happen as it has only grossed $50 million so far and word on the street is that the sequels are unlikely to see light of day now.

The movie, starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Ludi Lin and Becky G was certainly much more fun than we expected, particularly Cyler’s Billie, the Blue Ranger, whose take on the character’s autism made him a welcome addition to the lore and his performance was spot on.

Long story, short, we’re hoping for more Power Rangers because the first movie did a lot to set up a fun franchise… it just seems that the fan base wasn’t as big as expected.

Shame, really.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
