So, we all know that Matt Reeves is currently working on The Batman movie with Robert Pattinson stepping into the hero boots worn by Ben Affleck in Batman V Superman and Justice League.
But we also know that before that and after Batman V Superman star Ben Affleck was set to write, direct and star in his own Batman movie with Deathstroke as the main villain with Affleck once saying: “He’s a great villain because—I just had an instinctive feeling that he would match up with him well. You know, I’m a big admirer of that character as well, especially in the New 52 the way that they did Deathstroke, and I thought that it could work.”
Heck, we even got a look at Deathstroke from the movie (here) and Joe Manganiello played him briefly at the end of Justice League, with the hope being the character was set to be a big player in the DCEU.
Alas, it was not to be.
But at the time there were a lot of rumours that Affleck was keen to have a lot of Batman villains pop up, even if just in cameos, which led to a lot of speculation that the movie night be set in Arkham Asylum.
And, indeed, it seems it was.
Speaking on the HappySadConfused podcast, cinematographer Robert Richardson, who was set to work on Affleck’s Batman movie was talking about his new movie, Once Upon A Time In… Hollywood and the Caped Crusader came up.
“There was a script, but not a loved script,” he said.
“There was a lot of work he was doing to it to change it.”
This we knew because apparently Affleck was having problems making the script work.
But what was it about? “Well, he was going into the more insanity aspects,” he added.
“He was entering more into the Arkham, he’s going into where everyone was bad… that’s where we were going. I was very interested in that one.”
So, the movie would have seen Batman/Bruce Wayne heading into darker territory and possibly getting entangled in Arkham Asylum? Man… that sounds like it might have been, pardon the pun, crazy.
I know we shouldn’t pine over what’s not to be, but damn!
Thoughts?
