While we had a feeling it was coming, but it looks like we now have confirmation that director Dan Trachtenberg is returning to the world of alien hunters for Prey 2.
The first movie was a runaway hit for Hulu – where it ended up after Disney bought over Fox – and it was a damn fine Predator move after the trainwreck that was The Predator, so another installment will be welcome if Trachtenberg can keep the same level of quality and, as someone who also loves 10 Cloverfield Lane, the best Cloverfield movie (deal with it), I’m confident he can.
So, it seems that this week’s Production Weekly has Prey 2 listed as already in production!
But what can we expect? Well, Trachtenberg has chatted a bit about what a sequel could be: “In thinking about what sequels could be, the primary conversation was and always will be, what we can do that is also special, that hasn’t happened yet. Not just for the Predator franchise, but for this kind of genre in particular. Can we still be doing something cool?”
“[We] don’t want to have a scene in [a Predator movie] that’s like, oh, that could have been in the other Predator movies, or that could have been this Marvel film or this Star Wars. Only in this movie can you get this kind of thing.”
He certainly proved that with the setting of Prey which took Predator and put it up against a young Comanche warrior and had them both fight bears (yes really) and colonisers, so it was a fresh take on a familiar idea.
However, there’s always room for new tricks in old dogs, as he also addressed the question of possibly seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger or Danny Glover, the heroes Dutch in the first Predator and Lt Mike Harrigan in Predator 2, returning to the series and it seems he’s aware that there’s been efforts to bring them back over the years: “All I’ll say is — there’s still time for those guys. They’re still around, and wouldn’t that be awesome?”
Did… did he hesitate there? Does he know something? Is there a chance we could see Dutch and Harrigan back for a new Predator movie? In a time where nostalgia, fan service, and great stories are often smashed together, it’s not the craziest idea… and I’d be a very happy Predator fan if it came to pass.
