Pulp Fiction in space? Tarantino talks his Star Trek movie idea…

July 30th, 2019 by Marc Comments

So, despite saying he’s likely only to make one more movie recently, writer/director/legend Quentin Tarantino has been talking about Kill Bill 3 (here) and now he’s also talking about his idea for Star Trek.

Dubbed as his Pulp Fiction in space, Tarantino has big ideas for a movie he’s not even sure he’s going to direct.

“I love William Shatner on Star Trek. I love his performance as James T. Kirk. That is my connection. That is my umbilical cord,” he says of his seemingly favourite TV character.

“I [was] really so taken with JJ Abrams’ first reboot and how fantastic I thought Chris Pine channeled William Shatner. He didn’t go a serious actor-y way… I mean perfect, frankly. And [Zachary] Quinto is perfect as Spock. Those two guys, they f*cking got it.

Talking about the constantly brought up r-rating, Tarantio wants to play down how much it’ll change the core of Star Trek: “I just don’t think it’s that big of a deal but if I’m going to do it, then I’m going to do it my way. If you’ve seen my nine movies, you kind of know my way is an R-rated way and a way that is without certain restrictions. So that goes part and parcel. I think it would be more controversial if I said I’m going to do a PG movie and it’s going to fit exactly in the universe. It’s not me.”

However, one thing that is for certain is that he doesn’t like the Kelvin timeline created by JJ Abrams with his three Star Trek entries wherein the entire history of Trek has been spun off into a fresh timeline: “I still don’t quite understand how – and J.J. can’t explain it to me and my editor [Fred Raskin] has tried to explain to me and I still don’t get it – about… something happened in the first movie that now kinda wiped the slate clean?

“I don’t buy that. I don’t like it. I don’t appreciate it. F–k that. I don’t like that. I want the whole series to have happened! It just hasn’t happened yet. And Benedict Cumberbatch or whatever his name is, is not Khan. Khan is Khan. And I told JJ, ‘I don’t understand this, I don’t like it’ and he said, ‘Ignore it! Nobody likes it! I don’t understand it! Do whatever you want! If you want to do it the exact way it happened in the [original series], it can.’”

Well, to be fair, I see where he’s coming from.

“I will say one thing about Star Trek that I’ve been waiting for someone to bring up. I don’t know if I’ll do it or not. I’ve got to figure it out,” he goes on.

“I get annoyed at Simon Pegg. He doesn’t know anything about what’s going on and he keeps making all these comments as if he knows about stuff. One of the comments he said, he’s like “Well, look, it’s not going to be Pulp Fiction in space.” Yes, it is! If I do it, that’s exactly what it’ll be. It’ll be Pulp Fiction in space. That Pulp Fiction-y aspect, when I read the script, I felt, I have never read a science fiction movie that has this sh*t in it, ever. There’s no science fiction movie that has this in it. And they said, I know, that’s why we want to make it. It’s, at the very least, unique in that regard.”

So there you have it… don’t listen to what Simon Pegg has to say about Tarantino’s Trek because it seems he has no idea what’s happening, but it certainly does seem that he likes the new cast and, as previously rumoured, will want them involved.

I love the idea of Tarantino going full sci-fi but I still don’t know if i fully see him as a fit for Trek but I know this, I’m sure as hell keen to see what he might do with it.
