Recasts, returns and religion, Kevin Smith gearing up for Dogma 2

December 14th, 2025 by Marc Comments

It looks like Kevin Smith is planning on revisiting the world of what is probably his biggest movie, Dogma.

The writer/actor/director’s 1999 movie was, at the time, very, very controversial with his take on Catholicism and religion in general, with protests being held (daft, really) and many saying it was blasphemy… but it wasn’t.

Held by fans as his best movie – it’s not, Chasing Amy is unquestionably his best movie – the rights to Dogma have finally returned to Smith after years out of his control and now he’s gearing up to return to the story and see what he has still to say.

Happy 30th Anniversary! Kevin Smith announces third Jay & Silent Bob movie coming

In the original movie, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon played Loki and Bartleby, two fallen angels who wanted to get back into Heaven while, in the meantime, God has gone missing on Earth and Smith is beginning to talk about who would be returning and what their roles might be… should the movie ever happen.

In the past, Smith has made two sequels to his first movie, Clerks, and has tried to get a sequel to Mallrats, his second movie, off the ground several time, but now he says that he really wants to return to the Dogma world. Smith, himself a staunch Catholic, when asked if the sequel would ever happen, said: “Before I leave this best of all possible worlds, absolutely. But I’m the kind of guy that has to build a lot of runway for a long time. I mean, mind you, I’ve been talking about making Moose Jaws for 10 years. We’re very close, you know what I’m saying? But a Dogma follow-up has the benefit of people of brand name recognition. So it may be easier to get to than some other things. Dogma will be much easier to get financed than Moose Jaws.”

Kevin Smith’s Moose Jaws a-go with more Jay and Silent Bob, Mallrats and Red State coming too

He went on to say that he has discussed it with Affleck, but as of now, nothing is in the works, officially at least. Mind you, Affleck’s Bartleby died at the end of the movie, so it’s unclear how he would return to the story: “After Dogma came out, people would be like, ‘What happens to Bartleby and Loki at the end? And I was like, well, if you’re a touchy-feely Christian, you believe in forgiveness,” Smith said, “But if you’re an old school Catholic like myself, they’re burning in hell. They broke the laws, and that’s what happens. There’s punishment there. So that plays into our follow-up.”

Of course, should the movie happen, Smith would have to deal with bringing back many actors and characters, however, the death of Alan Rickman in 2016, meant that the return of his character, Metatron, would be a puzzle to be solved, but Smith is already thinking outside the metaphsyical box: “I want to write it for Helen Mirren. She is incredibly Alan-adjacent. She’s not playing Metatron, but she plays this movie’s version of Metatron.”

He went on: “When I was thinking, ‘Well, I don’t have Alan,’ at one point I was like, ‘Well, Adam Driver looks like a young Alan Rickman, just taller.

“But then I was like, no. Then I thought, ‘You know what? Helen Mirren, aside from being one of my favorite actors on the planet, I had that crossover moment with her and Alan at one point.’ As a writer and a romantic, you’ll make any connection or any justification you can,. But it started me thinking, maybe it would be Helen Mirren. So I’m writing it for Helen Mirren.”

However, in the name of expanding the universe, Smith plans on introducing new characters, not least of all, the king of lies himself, satan: “I worked with a kid years and years ago, and he was so sweet — nice boy, very talented — and then he went and became super famous. Whenever I write the devil, I think of Austin Butler.”

Confirmation that The Penguin season 2 is coming

Butler appeared in Smith’s, let’s be honest, dire Yoga Hosers: “Especially after Dune, man. His Feyd was pretty badass, but our devil is … he’s not like arched eyebrow insidious. He’s sexier than that. He’s like a grunge rocker. And I think Austin could pull that off pretty well.”

I would love a sequel to Dogma but I honestly believe that Smith has fallen off as a writer and director, so, if Dogma 2 were to happen, I’d want 1999 Smith working on it, not 2025 Smith… but I’m an optimist, I fully believe Smith still has the talent within him but if he’s visiting Heaven and hell, then he needs to dig deep.

Thoughts on Dogma 2? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all!
