The last time we heard anything about an Alita: Battle Angel sequel was in September 2023 when producer James Cameron hinted that sequels were still planned.
At the time he was working on his Avatar movies but also revealed that he was working on the Alita sequels too, saying: “On Avatar, I’m working in Wellington and Los Angeles and on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I’ll be working in Austin.”
It was all very exciting.
But that was almost two years ago.
It’s been very quiet since.
However, now director, Robert Rodriguez, speaking on The Joe Rogan Experience, once again lit the flames of sequel excitement for Rosa Salazar’s titular heroine.
James Cameron seemingly confirms more Alita: Battle Angel movies aleady being worked on
The director had previously said he thought the chances of another movie in the (planned) trilogy was unlikely with Disney’s buying of 20th Century Fox, however he now seems to think it’s possible and everyone is keen to return to that world but there is one issue… Jim Cameron: “He’s a little busy,” Rodriquez says.
Of course, Cameron is currently working on the next three Avatar movies, but Rodriguez assures fans: “Yeah, we want to do another one for sure.”
He even tells Rogan that a good bit of the set is still standing: “You gotta come to my studio. That whole city is still in my parking lot. 20-foot ceilings, seven streets. It’s like the largest standing set in the country, if not the world.”
He goes on: “Alita’s journey in the Iron City is far from over…”
Cameron and Rodriquez take an oath to make Alita: Battle Angel sequel
Based on Yukito Kishiro’s manga series, the cyberpunk movie seemed like a bad idea from the start but when it hit screens it was, well, it was really, really good and now has a big, impassioned fanbase and among those fans are Cameron, Rodriguez and Salazar themselves, who all want more movies in the series. It’s been six years, we want our girl back!
If you haven’t seen it yet and you love a bit of cyberpunk, then it’s something you’ll really want to check out.
Set several centuries in the future, the abandoned Alita is found in the scrapyard of Iron City by Ido, a compassionate cyber-doctor who takes the unconscious cyborg Alita to his clinic. When Alita awakens, she has no memory of who she is, nor does she have any recognition of the world she finds herself in. As Alita learns to navigate her new life and the treacherous streets of Iron City, Ido tries to shield her from her mysterious past.
