News on the movie adaptation of manga/anime Battle Angel Alita has been very sparse since it was announced 6 months ago that director James Cameron was stepping aside to allow Robert Rodriguez to helm the project,  that is, until now.

It’s been made known that there are three actresses in the lead running for the role of the lead character. That character, the titular Alita is an amnesiac cyborg who is found discarded in a garbage heap by a cybernetics doctor who rebuilds her and takes care of her. She discovers that she only remembers her proficient martial art training, which leads her to become a bounty hunter. The original anime story traces Alita’s attempts to rediscover her past memories and the characters whose lives she impacts on her journey.

According to the Hollywood Reporter Zendaya (Recently cast in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming) is currently the favourite for the role, but fellow actresses Maika Monroe (It Follows and the upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence) and Rosa Salazar (The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials) are also in the running as well with a final to be made within weeks.

The project has been wrought with a lot of false starts and uncertainty but perhaps this is the first sign of it getting back on track and eventually to our screens.
