It looks like Lucasfilm/Disney are bringing Tony Gilroy back to the Rogue One fold. Sort of.
Gilroy had to rewrite Rogue One and manage extensive reshoots when the movie was reportedly in trouble under the guidance of director Gareth Edwards and now he’s been brought on board to write the pilot for Disney+’s Cassian Andor series.
The series is dubbed a Star Wars spy story full of espionage and starring a returning Diego Luna as Cassian Andor along with his droid buddy K2SO, played by Alan Tudyk.
Gilroy, I’m hearing, will also direct several episodes of the series at Disney.
Gilroy had previously said that the reason he was able to strip down rogue One to the bare basics and start again was because he didn’t get tied up in the expanded universe because, well, he had no great connection to it: “That was my super power. I’ve never been interested in Star Wars, ever. So I had no reverence for it whatsoever. I was unafraid about that. And they were in such a swamp…they were in so much terrible, terrible, trouble that all you could do was improve their position.”
Personally, I would rather see someone who is connected to the source material take over the reigns, but that being said, I really liked Rogue One, so maybe this is a gamble that will pay off for Disney and Lucasfilm when Cassian Andor arrives on Disney+ in 2021.
What say you all? I want to hear your thoughts….
