You’d imagine that after Lord and Miller’s Spider-Verse movies established that there are core events that define who the heroes in the Marvel universe(s) are, that no one would mess with one of the greatest moments in comic book history that led to the creation of one of the greatest heroes of all time.
But someone has.
Big time.
In a new interview, the Russo brothers, who introduced Peter Parker/Spider-Man ten years ago in Captain America: Civil War, have explained that Tom Holland’s Spidey isn’t who the character has been established to be for the last six decades, and he didn’t go through the definitive origin story.
Drew Goddard confirms he’s still working on the new Matrix movie
“Spider-Man was one of my favorite characters growing up, If not my favorite,” Joe Russo said, “and what I related to was this idea of a kid with incredible responsibility, right? And I think you could manifest that responsibility through accidental death, right? And feeling the pressure, and the sense of loss in your life in a way that would keep the spirit that we wanted.”
Sorry… what?
Russo went on: “[But] what Tom Holland is as an actor, if he blamed himself for his Uncle Ben’s death, I think he becomes a very different character. So in our minds, no, he wasn’t responsible for Uncle Ben’s death. That would have been a different interpretation. A more intense interpretation of the character.”
So, in the MCU, this Peter Parker didn’t indirectly cause the murder of Uncle Ben, but in this world, he died by accident.
Gina Carano ‘has had talks’ with Filoni and Favreau… Cara Dune returning to Star Wars?
Sorry, I don’t think that works… Peter Parker, like all great heroes, is born through fire – Uncle Ben’s death was his formative moment, his origin story, his canon event, to make that no longer be part of Spider-Man’s story? Nah, I don’t like that one bit.
That all said, it does make sense because of how much the Holland/MCU Spidey just doesn’t really feel completely like Spider-Man. Or is that just me?
Thoughts? I know you have them and I wanna hear ’em all,
