Scream VII already in production? And will we see Neve Campbell back for it?

March 9th, 2023 by Marc Comments

While the Scream franchise seemed to be done and dusted after the fourth installment in the series in 2011 and the death of director Wes Craven, it seems that, with Scream 6 hitting screens tomorrow night, the franchise is very much alive and well and, if this rumour turns out to be true – and we suspect it is – there’s more Ghostface coming. And soon.

The newest movie is promising to open big this weekend – and it should as it’s a rollercoaster of a movie that this Scream fan really enjoyed – and the studio would be very silly to not be looking to have another story in the franchise out in the next year or so. and it seems they agree.

In a recent interview for the movie’s release, directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – collectively known as Radio Silence – said that they were ‘hopeful’ a seventh movie would happen:

“We hope,” Matt Bettinelli-Olpin said, “We want to be watching Scream movies whether we’re involved or not for the rest of our lives.” Gillett added: “We’re so happy it’s back.”

However, we’re hearing they’re being coy and that the next movie is already greenlit at Paramount, who are keen to keep up the momentum on the series with the movie already prepping and they’re hoping to get it out as quickly as Six followed the fifth movie with little over a year between them. If so, that means Ghostface will be back in 2024 and we’re already (tentatively) excited as heck.

Having seen the movie last night, it certainly seems like there’s a plan – I don’t want to say with which characters as, since it’s Scream, it could be spoilerish – and this plan could be very, very interesting and a great way to shake up the series.

But, the big question is, will we see the original Final Girl, Sidney Prescott, left, back?

Well, in a recent interview Bettinelli-Oplin and Gillett said that actress Neve Campbell is a dear friend and they stayed in contact with her throughout the making of Scream VI and when asked if she’d return they replied “Fingers crossed! We would love it!”. But it really seems like they’re trying to stay tight-lipped on this one.

Campbell starred in the first five Scream movies and is iconic as Sidney but it was much to the fandom’s dismay that she announced she wouldn’t be in the sixth movie over a pay dispute (here). In the new movie her character is mentioned several times and it’s explained why she wasn’t there but I really, really get the feeling Sidney will be front and centre when Scream VII hits.

For now, I’m just excited to have another Scream movie – another good Scream movie – in cinemas and look forward to where the next chapter, if and when it happens, goes.

Oh and what IS your favourite scary movie?

Following the latest Ghostface killings, the four survivors leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. In Scream VI, Melissa Barrera (“Sam Carpenter”), Jasmin Savoy Brown (“Mindy Meeks-Martin”), Mason Gooding (“Chad Meeks-Martin”), Jenna Ortega (“Tara Carpenter”), Hayden Panettiere (“Kirby Reed”) and Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) return to their roles in the franchise alongside Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving.
