Sony have given the [He-Man and the] Masters of the Universe movie a release date…

April 27th, 2017 by Marc Comments

Well, we’ve known for ages that Sony were hoping to bring He-Man back to the big screen and now it has a release date!

For a long time Charlie’s Angels director McG was attached to the movie (he’s not any more) and was well alone with the movie’s early stages of development. He even talked about it (here), saying:

“I think we want to honor the fan base, first and foremost. We also need to be cognizant of the incredible resonance of what Kevin Feige is doing with Marvel, and the balance of full-bodied entertainment. That it’s both credible and emotional, action-packed, and the story of a hero’s journey. It’s the genesis of He-Man, it’s the becoming of He-Man. We want it to be clicking on all cylinders in that regard. We’re not going to stop until we get it right.

“Listen, I love that movie with Frank [Langella] and Dolph [Lundgren]. I watch it, and it’s a tremendous pleasure for me to watch. I’m raised on the toys, and I’m down at Mattel all the time. We’re just really focused on getting it right. I want it to be full-bodied entertainment that respects the fan base, and is more emotional than you might imagine, inventive and original. Obviously, we’re all cognizant of what’s going on with Game of Thrones. It’s incredible. We’re cognizant of what’s going on in Guardians of the Galaxy. James Gunn’s doing a great job. We’re going to try to answer the call and take it higher. How’s that sound?”

We can only assume that his comments still hold true to the tone the final movie will go with when Masters of the Universe is released on 18th December 2019.

As for who the director will be or who will play the lead roles of Adam/He-Man and Skeletor is anyone’s guess but when they are name dropping Game Of Thrones, Marvel and Guardians of the Galaxy then we must remain hopeful that they will deliver something that will give the fans what they really want.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
