The Captain Planet script is being penned as we type…

So, just when you thought we’d reached Superhero breaking point in cinemas we get confirmation that the Captain Planet movie is coming…

Last we heard was two years ago when the crazy rumour was bouncing around that Leonardo DiCaprio was in the running to play the hero (here) so we’d almost forgotten about it.

Until now.

Scream Queens star Glen Powell is also something of a screenwriter and he’s revealed that he’s working on the adaptation of the famous – but awful – 1990s cartoon: “They’ve tried to make it into a superhero movie before,” he says, talking about Captain Planet, “but they kind of did like an earnest take and ours is way more subversive and fun and like dark and irreverent.

“Sometimes you have to think of these things logically. If you have a blue superhero with a green mullet, you can’t do like an earnest take on that. You have to go at it from a fun [direction].

“It’s been an interesting process and it’s taken a long time, but now we’re getting that up and going and we’re really stoked about it,” Powell added.

Honestly, we still doubt this will ever happen but if it does, there’s honestly no other way to do that in a send-up capacity. We see a tone something similar to the recent Starsky and Hutch movie crossed with Mystery Men.

But we could be wrong.

What say you all? Would you watch a Captain Planet movie? Let us know…

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
