Tremors creators get rights back… want Kevin Bacon to return to franchise

Some good news for fans of the Tremor franchise, especially the classic first movie.

Stampede Entertainment has won back the rights to the original 1990 movie starring Kevin Bacon and the late Fred West as Val and Earl, two well-intentioned but bumbling everymen who end up saving the two of Perfection from massive worm monsters. It might sound bad but it’s a cracking watch, if you’ve never seen it.

That means director Ron Underwood, writers Brent Maddock and SS Wilson and producer Nancy Roberts now have control of the franchise’s future after Universal’s takeover in the last three movies.

The 2003 Tremors TV series is online to view for free…

In a press release on their website, they wrote: “We are discussing a return-to-Perfection sequel, and one or two more outlandish ideas featuring graboids in new settings.

“We are considering ideas that feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Val, but no promises!

It’s well known that Bacon loves the Tremors franchise and has said he would return if they wanted him; in fact, he did return as Val in 2017’s TV series pilot but it wasn’t picked up by Syfy and has been hidden away ever since.

The team also plans on getting author Christian Francis to write a script based on their original script, entitled Beneath Perfection.

WATCH: We have the trailer for the Tremors: TV Series! Yes! But it’s been cancelled! What?!

Would you like to see Bacon return as Val? Personally, I would, but it wouldn’t be the same without his sidekick Eral, played by Ward.

As per their website:

As was announced at the Santa Fe Tremors Fest in October, 2024, the partners in Stampede Entertainment have reclaimed the rights to the original script for Tremors.

We’ve been exploring what this may allow us to do, so here’s the update.

First, we aren’t reading outside ideas.

We are discussing a return-to-Perfection sequel, and one or two more outlandish ideas featuring graboids in new settings.

Whatever we decide to pitch to Hollywood, it will not be a remake of the first movie with a new cast.  Nor will it be a version of our original script for Tremors 5 (a question that is frequently sent to the Stampede FAQ)

We are considering ideas that feature the return of Kevin Bacon as Val, but no promises!

LICENSING UPDATE:

One bit of good news: we have made a deal with writer Christian Francis to do a Tremors novelization based on our script, since Universal never did one.

Beyond that, it is now clear we have no rights to the first movie and no ability to license anything from it.  We cannot license, for example, t-shirts with a graboid on them, or even something with the Tremors title logo (the original script was titled “Beneath Perfection”).

Therefore, all requests for licensing anything from any of the Tremors films must be still be referred to Universal Studios.
