Val Kilmer is back for Top Gun: Maverick. Probably.

June 7th, 2018 by Marc Comments

You may recall a while ago that we reported that Val Kilmer was ready to get back in action for the Top Gun sequel (here) and now it seems he’s back as Iceman! Em, probably…

So firstly, star Tom Cruise posted an image a few days ago signifying that Top Gun: Maverick has started filming:

The poster urged us all to ‘Feel the need’ but, while it was pretty awesome, many of us were wondering if Kilmer was back too… after all, we can’t have Maverick without his Iceman, can we?

And then on his Facebook page, Kilmer seemed to confirm what we all hoped for: “offered ‪#‎topgun2‬ — not often you get to say ‘yes’ without reading the script…”

But then the actor took to Facebook again to say that, while it looks good, it’s not confirmed: “This is a long way off so calm down. This has been talked about for a long long time and being offered a role is very different from doing a role. I jumped the gun with my post. I jumped the topgun… An innocent mistake. It was just such a wonderful phone call with my agent…”

Look, while he may have announced the news out of hand, we record it’s a safe bet that Kilmer will be back, once again feeling the need… the need for speed!

Wonder if Anthony Edwards and Kelly McGillis are available? Hey, it’s a movie…

Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on July 12th, 2019 and will be directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks.

Marc is a self-confessed nerd. Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
