Dear God in Heaven, why is Taika Waititi looking to make a Judge Dredd movie?!
Now, don’t get me wrong, I like Waititi – Jojo Rabbit is one of my favourite movies – but he damaged the foundations of Thor with Ragnarok, making him a clown, before devastating the character entirely with the terrible, terrible entry Love and Thunder, so the thoughts of him taking on Dredd are, well, sickening.
Word on the street is that Waititi wants to make the movie like the comics, with a darkly funny undertone and, of course, the plan is that it will launch a shared universe of stories.
Yes! Karl Urban confirms he is in talks to return as Judge Dredd in Mega City One TV series
Dredd himself has had a checkered history on the big screen with Sylvester Stallone’s 1995 movie being a bastardisation of everything the character was before Alex Garland penned the 2012 movie starring Karl Urban, which was dark, oppressive and violent as hell… so, you know, perfect.
Sadly, ‘dark, oppressive and violent as hell’ does not feel like a good fit when Waititi is mentioned.
However, one saving grace is that the project is being written by Drew Pearce, the writer of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Iron Man 3.
Apparently, Pearce and Waititi are friends and fans of the comics and have wanted a project to work together on for years.
Karl Urban talks about the chances of him playing Judge Dredd again on the big – or small – screen
This is believed to be a fresh take and it’s not likely that Urban (or, I suppose, Stallone) will be involved – I also don’t believe it’s anything to do with the (presumably) dead Mega City One TV series that was big news in 2017 and even might have seen Urban back in the suit.
According to the new report, the movie is ‘meant to be a fun sci-fi blockbuster that nonetheless speaks to this moment in culture. The desire is to see the movie launch a Dredd universe that could be explored with additional movies and shows across various platforms.’
I firmly believe that Dredd’s world would work on the big and small screen and could be a blast to explore but when I hear terms like ‘fun blockbuster’ I get nervous because that ain’t Dredd, he’s down and dirty and always should be.
Anyway, go watch the Urban movie.
