Warners already planning on Children of Dune without Denis Villeneuve?

With the Dune franchise already two movies and a TV series strong, with a third movie, Dune: Messiah, from director Denis Villeneuve set to film next year for a 2027 release, Warner Bros are already looking at what comes next.

Frank Herbert’s epic sci-fi series is a sprawling universe that has been adapted several times on the big and small screen, but there’s no arguing that Villeneuve’s movies and the Dune: Prophecy series, are the first to nail Herbert’s universe, however, the director has made it clear that after Dune: Messiah, he’s stepping away from the franchise, leaving it there for others to explore after him: “Listen, if Dune: Messiah happens, it will have been many years for me on Arrakis, and I would love to do something else,” said Villeneuve.

“I think that it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiah, there are the seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else afterwards, because they are beautiful books. They are more difficult to adapt. They become more and more esoteric.”

And that seems to be exactly what’s happening as early reports are that Warners are already planning a fourth entry with Children of Dune (the third book) set to be the fourth movie, taking place nine years after the events of Dune: Messiah. On top of this, it seems there are plans for a second TV series too after Dune: Prohecy.

This is, of course, all rumour as of now but when Villeneuve leaves, if it’s on a high, WB would be mad to not try to continue the story… it’s just finding another director of Villeneuve’s caliber is going to be as big a challenge as making a Dune movie itself.

Who would you like to see step up after Villeneuve? Who do you think could fill those big, sand-filled boots? Let me know…
