Aw crap.
It looks like Ben Affleck may be stepping down after Justice League as Batman.
Dammit! Seriously?!
Word is that Warners are working on a way to remove Affleck ‘gracefully’ as the tone and direction of the DC Cinematic Universe is changing.
With the actor set for SDCC this weekend to promote Justice League, it is entirely possible he’ll not be playing him again.
While Warners chief Toby Emmerich and The Batman diretor Matt Reeves are both insisting Affleck is their Batman, it seems that there is plans to get him out already.
Which is weird because in February we reported that plans we in place to create a Final Crisis type event in the DC movies and replace Affleck with… Armie Hammer. At the time we wrote:
“At one point we were even hearing rumours that Armie Hammer, who has long been attached to Green Lantern, was actually set to play Bruce Wayne/Batman after Justice League. These reports claimed that the reason The Flash movie was being rewritten was to allow that movie to cover the Flashpoint story line wherein Flash alters the whole timeline of the DC Universe (the TV Series is currently covering this story) and this would result in Bruce Wayne looking like Hammer after it.”
Affleck’s relationship with the character has been bumpy so far. First he was writing, directing and starring (he’s a massive comic nerd in real life). Then, he stepped down as director and now he’s also had his script – which he co-wrote with DC Comics’ Geoff Johns – rewritten, but he is still starring… but we have to admit, the bumpy road (along with the whole Sad-fleck thing after the release of BvS) makes us thnk this may actually happen.
Let’s not also forget that the actor is 45 at the minute and that would put him close to 50 by the time he films The Batman and Matt Reeves is talking about a trilogy of Batman movies.
Well keep you posted as we hear more, gang…
In related news, we’re also hearing that Matt Reeves isn’t writing the script for The Batman as assumed by, well, everyone.
Rather he’s possibly going to get Planet of the Apes and, em, Wolverine writer Mark Bomback to do the writing for him. The two are old friends, so this isn’t the crazier idea n the world either.
Big changes for Batman within the DC Movies? We hate to say it but… very possibly.
