Writer confirms Cloverfield sequel is still ‘in the works’

July 4th, 2022 by Marc Comments

Any Cloverfield fans on here tonight?

Well, if, like us, you love – but are baffled by – the Cloverfield universe, then I have some good news for you, as the straight-up sequel to the first movie is still in development.

So far there have been three Cloverfield movies that have not been related to each other at all on face value but, if you pay attention and dig a little deeper, you’ll see that they are, in fact related to each other and all three paint a big tapestry that weaves in monsters, aliens, parallel universes, holes ripped in time and space and slushies – if you’re confused then you can have fun jumping into this video and this one.

But we reported way back in January 2021 (here) that Matt Reeves’ first movie, Cloverfield, which was a found-footage adventure that saw a giant monster rampage across and destroy New York, is getting a sequel which will be written by The Batman spin-off writer Joe Barton and, like the others, will be produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures. Word is, this movie is not a found footage one like the first.

However, we were worried that, given how different things in the world are now compared to January 2021, the movie may no longer be happening. But it is.

A fan on the Cloververse subreddit sent Barton a message on Twitter and asked if the movie was still happening and he responded in the very positive:

Barton said, above, that while he can’t reveal anything, “yes, it’s in the works,” and, given that it’s a Cloverfield movie, it’s no surprise he can’t reveal anything.

The thing is that, like the other movies, due to their nature, the movie could have already been filmed and we might not even know about it until it’s released, after all, I still remember when the 10Cloverfield Lane trailer dropped in 2016 for a movie that we didn’t know existed, never mind it was a Cloverfield sequel… of sorts.

Anyways, there’s more Cloverfield monster mayhem coming and that’s something to look forward to.

Ever since seeing Star Wars for the first time around 1979 he’s been an unapologetic fan of the Wars and still believes, with Clone Wars and now Underworld, we are yet to see the best Star Wars. He’s a dad of two who now doesn’t have the time (or money) to collect the amount of toys, comics, movies and books he once did, much to the relief of his long-suffering wife. In the real world he’s a graphic designer. He started Following the Nerd because he was tired of searching a million sites every day for all the best news that he loves and decided to create one place where you can go to get the whole lot. Secretly he longs to be sitting in the cockpit of his YT-1300 Corellian Transport ship with his co-pilot Chewie, roaming the universe, waiting for his next big adventure, but feels just at home watching cartoons with his kids….
