Well, well, well… we did not expect this news tonight, but here we are…
Thirteen years after the release of the first movie, we finally have news of a sequel to Cloverfield and, honestly, I cannot wait.
The movie, which made Matt Reeves an a-list director, told the story of one night in New York when a massive monster rose from the depths of the ocean and basically leveled the whole city, starting with the Statue of Liberty. It’s schlocky, scary and insane and it’s a damned good ride.
Of course, since then have had two further Cloverfield movies in the form of the superb 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and the not as superb but certainly interesting The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) which, unlike 10 Cloverfield Lane, at least tried to tenuously link to the first movie when it arrived on Netflix.
But now we have news that a genuine sequel to the first movie is in production.
The movie will be once again produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot and Paramount Pictures and will be penned by The Batman spinoff series (here) writer Joe Barton and, according to the new report, the movie will not be a found-footage movie like the first movie.
Matt Reeves is not believed to be involved with this movie.
So, are you excited to have a sequel to the first movie? Do you think it will develop upon the massive universe building the first movie did outside the movie (you can read about that here – it was revolutionary) or do you think it wll try to tie the other movies in more coherently?
Let me know all your thoughts on this one, gang…
