We have known for some time now that, despite not being part of the narrative originally, Jared Leto’s Joker is now part of the story of Zack Snyder’s Justice League which will be released next month.
Going beyond the ‘Snyder Cut’ which was the movie Zack Snyder was making before leaving Warner Bros due to the death of his daughter, the movie has been given around $70m to finish what he started and, from what we can see, to basically make a movie with a start, middle and end (it was originally set to end on a cliffhanger).
And now Snyder has revealed his first look at Jared Leto’s Joker and, while not clear, it is obvious the tattoos he had in Suicide Squad are gone and his hair is longer – this time in with earlier reports we had heard about how he would appear.
It also seems that the Joker card he’s holding in the image is the one that we see Batman has taped to his gun in the Knightmare scene in Batman v Superman:
In the tweet (below) where Snyder shared the image, he also said thank you to Suicide Squad director David Ayer: “Amazing character you created. Honored to have our worlds collide.”
This is clearly a nod to Ayer’s movie and the version of Joker Leto played which was a very divisive take on the role – and also a possible shout-out to those of us wanting the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, a story eerily similar to Justice League where the movie was changed by the studio and now fans want the original vision for the movie.
Zack Snyder previously said of this take on Joker: “Water has gone under the proverbial bridge between when last we saw Joker and this appearance. So he’s made some…he’s a road-weary Joker, I guess that’s a way of saying it.”

In addition to this, yesterday Snyder also got excitement for his Justice League up by revealing a line of dialogue spoken, for the first time in the DC Cinematic Universe by the Martian Manhunter:

So, now we know that Harry Lennix’s Martian Manhunter (here) will have a speaking role in the movie… makes me excited to see just how big a part he’ll play…
In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions.
The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes.
Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League arrives on HBO Max on March 18th
