It happened almost 2 hours early, thanks to Roger Federer.

The BBC, hot on the heels of the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final (kudos on knowing your audience there, folks), have now announced the actor to play the Thirteenth Doctor when Peter Capaldi bows out in December. And it’s someone new showrunner Chris Chibnal has brought over with him from Broadchurch. No, it’s not David Tennant…

Jodie Whittaker has officially been cast as the Doctor’s next incarnation. She has had this to say so far:

I’m beyond excited to begin this epic journey – with Chris and with every Whovian on this planet. It’s more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can’t wait.

Chris Chibnall said he intended for the 13th Doctor to be a woman from day one:

I always knew I wanted the 13th Doctor to be a woman and we’re thrilled to have secured our number one choice. Her audition for the Doctor simply blew us all away. Jodie is an in-demand, funny, inspiring, super-smart force of nature and will bring loads of wit, strength and warmth to the role. The 13th Doctor is on her way.

So what do you guys think? Is this a change that the show will take to well, or is it going too far? Let us know below, but for the love of Odin’s beard, at least try and keep it civil…

Dave was born at an early age to parents of both sexes. He has been a self-confessed geek for as long as he can remember, having been raised through the 80s on a steady diet of Doctor Who, Star Trek, Red Dwarf and (sigh) Knight Rider. Throw the usual assortment of Saturday morning cartoons into the mix and we have something quite exceptional: someone with an encyclopaedic knowledge of utter tosh; a love of giant robots and spaceships fighting; and the strange desire to leap tall buildings in a single bound while wearing his underpants over his trousers. The death ray is currently in the works and one day you shall all bow to him, his giant space station and fleet of funky orange space shuttles...

I’m so excited! The only thing that would have made it better was if she were Ginger. But The Doctor has wanted to be female for SO long. And with The Master/Mistress I certainly felt it was a matter of time.
