BBC unceremoniously announces new Doctor Who star on social media…

May 8th, 2022 by Marc Comments

So, fans of Doctor Who will know that the announcement of the next incarnation of the Timelord is always a big deal for fans and is usually announced on TV with a fair amount of fanfare.

However, fans will also know that over the last few years, the iconic sci-fi classic has lost lots of its viewers and fans, particularly during the Chris Chibnal as showrunner era, but many of us are still excited to see who the next regeneration will be, especially as Russell T Davies, the man who brought the series back with Christopher Eccleston in 2005 is back in control.

And today, without warning or any umpf, the latest actor to take the role has been revealed.

Ncuti Gatwa, star of hit Netflix show Sex Education in which he plays Eric, below, has been handed the keys to the TARDIS, picking up from current Doctor Jodie Whittaker who steps down in the next special to be aired later this year.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling,” said the young star.

“A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”

“Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

The big reason to be excited for Gawa’s casting is that Davies’ previous casting choices were Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, two of the show’s most iconic choices.

“Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself,” Gawa said, “and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground. The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

Davies himself said of the casting: “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot, I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

With the casting of the next Doctor finally announced, we expect to hear more and more news of the show’s future in the coming days, weeks and months and we’ll bring it all to you as it happens
