Disney+’s Indiana Jones series to focus on Abner Ravenwood?

November 15th, 2022 by Marc Comments

With the news that Harrison Ford would be hanging up his hat after next year’s Indiana Jones 5 (here), we all thought that it might be the end of the franchise.

We would have five movies, comics, games, books and the really rather good Young Indiana Jones TV series, but we should have known that since Disney own it, then there’s, as they say, life in the old girl yet.

Variety reports that Disney are currently developing an Indiana Jones series and it seems that it may not be based on Indy himself but rather in the universe of those movies.

In their newest video, below, Jeff Sneider and Jon Rocha spill the details on what they are hearing the series will be.

And, honestly, if it’s not a series starring Temple of Doom’s Ke Huy Quan – who just started acting again in then amazing Everything, Everywhere, All At Once – as a grown-up Short Round then do we even care?

Well, yes, yes we do… it’s just the way we’re wired. Sorry. Not Sorry.

So, according to the scoopers, the series will follow Abner Ravenwood.

Who?

Well, Abner has never been seen onscreen but is a big character in Indy’s past. He was the father of Marion Ravenwood, played in the movies by the wonderful Karen Allen in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

In the lore, he was Indy’s mentor at the University of Chicago, a friend and a fellow adventurer who split with Jones in 1926 when he had an affair with Ravenwood’s daughter, Marion.

Abner was obsessed with the Ark of the Covenant and had in his possession the Staff of Ra which Indy was looking for in Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Staff pinpointed the location of the Ark and, well, go watch the movie if you don’t know!

By the time we first meet Indy and Marion, Abner is dead, dying in an avalanche in 1936 – although the Marvel comics hinted that he was actually still alive at the time… but we’re not sure if they’re canon or not.

Presumably, the series, should it happen, will be about Abner’s adventures and we’d expect the Staff will be in there somewhere.

Anyways, what do you all think? Would you watch an Indy series without Indy? Let us know all your thought, gang.
