You may recall that during the first season of WandaVision there was loads of speculation about what might happen and who might appear (and, despite all the nastiness online, a lot of this was set to happen but didn’t due to that damned virus here) but one of the big rumours was that Bendict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange was set to appear (here).
Now, it seems that, yes, Strange was indeed originally part of the plan for WandaVision.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, in a new interview with Rolling Stone Magazine, revealed that, yes, the other big MCU character was part of the plan but there were fears he would steal some of Wanda’s (Elizabeth Olsen) limelight.
In WandaVision, Wanda imprisoned an entire townful of people to create an alternate bubble reality where her love, Vision (Paul Bettany) could be with her and they could love in a sit-com bliss. However, the people were under her spell against there will and the show became about how people in the real world could infiltrate the town and get Wanda to come to her senses.
Also, in the series, we got a series of ads on TV that reflected what was happening in the wider Marvel world. However, that wasn’t the original plan… those ads were originally meant to be Doctor Strange trying to break into her fake reality, and Cumberbatch was even signed on to appear but ultimately it didn’t happen.
“Some people might say, ‘Oh, it would’ve been so cool to see Doctor Strange,'” said Feige. “But It would have taken away from Wanda. We didn’t want the end of the show to be commoditized to go to the next movie – here’s the white guy, ‘Let me show you how power works.”
In fact, it was so much part of the plan that there had to be rewritten to part of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, a movie, due in 2022, which will also star Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff in a major role.
So, there you have it… looks like the fans were right about that one too. Who knew?
