We reported last week that Big Finish was making an unused Russell T Davies script into a Doctor Who audio adventure (here) and now we have more news about the former Doctor Who showrunner’s time on the iconic sci-fi series.
Davies, who resurrected the series in 2005 when he brought in Christopher Eccleston, was showrunner between 2005 – 2010 – arguably the golden years of so-called New Who – and during that time he began opening the world of Doctor Who out beyond the core show.
“I was in the middle of running an empire!” Davies said in the new interview. “And my God I did that 10 years too soon, didn’t I?”
The empire he’s referring to is the one which saw Doctor Who become a massive show again and spawned the more child-friendly Sarah-Jane Adventures and the adult-skewed Torchwood. But he feels that that was something that should have been capitalised on and expanded.
“There should be a Doctor Who channel now. You look at those Disney announcements, of all those new Star Wars and Marvel shows, you think ‘we should be sitting here announcing The Nyssa Adventures or The Return of Donna Noble, and you should have the 10th and 11th Doctors together in a 10-part series’.”
I have to say, I agree with this wholeheartedly – Doctor Who is a doorway to another universe and there’s literally hundreds of characters and groups who would be a cracking choice for a spinoff… the Paternoster Gang, left, for example, are a cracking addition to the Whoniverse and I know there was a plan to give them a series a while ago, but they’d be a cracking show to develop.
Even now, there’s plenty of opportunities to have two Doctor Who shows running – one with Jo Martin who was introduced as an older regeneration of the character and another for the current Doctor. Or, recently, we talked about how a Paul McGann series was envisioned (here), so we could still get that series – I’d imagine a McGann series would be massive for fans
But what say you all? Would you like to see a Doctor Who universe being created? I know I would.
