Gillian Anderson confirms this is her last season of The X-Files, David Duchovny… not so much

January 11th, 2018 by Irwin Fletcher Comments

We reported last week that Gillian Anderson was pretty much done with playing Dana Scully in The X-Files and now, sadly, the actress has confirmed that this is her last season on the supernatural favourite.

Making the announcement official at the 2018 Winter Television Critics Association press tour, the actress said: “I thought that the previous [season] was going to be it. It was dipping our toe back in again and just meeting up again and making the most of it and getting to play these wonderful characters again. But the minute they mentioned that they might be interested in doing another, I thought, do you know what? That didn’t feel like the right way to end it.”

The actress said that while she hadn’t really intended on doing another season after last year’s return to the role, her interest was peaked when discussions arose about giving her a proper send-off: “The way that the writers were talking about doing another season, were we to do another season, sounded more like a good ending to me. And so when I was asked to do another season, I agreed to do another season. It never occurred to me, nor was it discussed or suggested, that it was that we were starting a new series.”

So it sounds like Scully will definitely have an ending to her character later this season, “I don’t really want to be tied down to months and months of doing any particular one thing that I feel like I’ve done. I’ve done this now for decades, and it’s time for me to hang up Scully’s hat,” Anderson added.

“This is it for me. I’m really serious. [I have] so much respect for David [Duchovny], and it’s really sad, but I’m finished, and that’s the end of that,” she says.

Wow, it really sounds like she is finished with the character. But what of Mulder himself, David Duchovny? We had The X-Files without Spooky Mulder during its original run, could we see it continue without Scully?

“[I’ve] tried to say goodbye to Fox Mulder many times,” says Duchovny with a smile, “they all went and they did the show without me So how do you like that? I’m feeling pretty pissed off, now that I remember.”

But it seems that he, unlike Anderson, is happy to continue in the role, but is also happy to say goodbye to it too: “I’m good either way. I’m good, you know, with this being the end. I’m good with it not being the end.”

Will we have a satisfying conclusion to the season? Well, writer and producer Glen Morgan said: “Some of those questions will be answered. Some, I think, won’t, because that’s the way this show is.”

What does that mean?! Well, regarding getting a satisfying end to the whole affair we want to believe. But sadly, we trust no-one.
