We’ve known for a while that HBO Max’s Gotham PD spinoff would time into Matt Reeves The Batman (here) but now we have a bit more info on what that might mean.
Now, Ed Brubaker, co-writer of the DC Comic series Gotham Central with Greg Rucka, has been chatting about the series to Kevin Smith and he’s hinted what exactly it will focus on.
He revealed that he spoke to someone attached to Reeves’ The Batman and was told a little about where the series will go: “I was like ‘maybe they’re really going to make Gotham Central this time’, and so I reached out to a producer who works for Matt Reeves and he says, ‘no, that’s not really Gotham Central’.” Brubaker said.
“They’re making sure that they don’t call it Gotham Central and it’s more of a spinoff from the movie. It’s like the James Gordon show.”
The series will serve as a prequel to The Batman and will be set during Batman’s first year on the job before he and Gordon become ‘friends’ as we see they are in the movie trailer (below) and is being overseen by Reeves.
In this continuity, Gordon will be played by James Bond and West World star Jeffrey Wright and it’s expected he will come back to lead the series too.
It’s odd that they would go in this direction, given that Gotham ran for a successful five seasons and was very much ‘the James Gordon Show’ too but they obviously have faith in the world Reeves and Batman star Robert Pattison and, obviously, Wright are creating.
There’s no release date for the series yet but we’ll keep you posted as and when we get more details.
Thoughts? I want them.
