Henry Cavill departs The Witcher, Liam Hemsworth steps up…

November 6th, 2022 by Marc Comments

Well, with the big news that Henry Cavill was back as Superman in the DCEU (here), we were wondering if it would have an impact on his other commitments, including playing Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s Witcher series… and now it seems we have an answer.

The show’s third season is set to air next year with Cavill having just recently finished filming and it seems that will be it for his filming with Liam Hemsworth, brother of Thor actor, Chris, will be stepping in to take over the role.

It was a surprise for sure but it seems that, if rumours are true, Cavill had been unhappy with the show’s direction for a while, so possibly his return as Superman was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4,” said Cavill in a statement.

“In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”

We’re also hearing rumour that HBO have offered Cavill the choice of any role in season two of Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon, so it’s very possible it’s not just his Clark Kent commitment that has him walking from The Witcher. However, it has us wondering if things are moving ahead faster than we thought with Man of Steel 2… here’s hoping.

Hemsworth commented on his casting, saying: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia.

“Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”

The Witcher story continues this Christmas with spin-off series The Witcher: Blood Origin hitting Netflix on Christmas Day and, as we said above, with season 3 set for next year, it’s unlikely Hemsworth will be on screens in the gig until 2024 at the earliest.

While it’s great to have our Superman back, this is undoubtedly a kick in the teeth for fans of The Witcher and has many wondering if Hemsworth, best known for the Hunger Games series, has the chops to pick the mantle up.

Only time will tell, I suppose.

Thoughts? I know you have ’em…
