Ok, full disclosure, I’m not the biggest Trek fan around… honestly, DS9 was my favourite show although I did enjoy the Abrams movies and Discovery (man, I can feel the hate from here!) but even I’m excited both is news…
Star Trek Discovery exec producer Alex Kurtzman has renewed his deal with CBS for a five-year contract after Aaron Harberts and Gretchen Berg were fired a few weeks back.
In that deal Kurtzman will be the soul showrunner of Discovery but on top of that, he will be developing several Trek projects.
These may include:
- A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo most recently developed the CW’s reboot of “Dynasty” and previously created shows like “Gossip Girl” and Hulu and Marvel’s “Runaways.”
- A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
- A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story (we reported on this a year ago).
- An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
Alex Kurtzman is staying in business with CBS Television Studios.
Now, here’s the interesting part, there is a lot of talk that one of the series above is trying to get Star Trek: The Next Generation’s Capt. Jean-Luc Picard back… and not a recast, they want Patrick Stewart int he role!
Word is that the actor wants to pay Picard again but a deal is pretty far off… it may never happen but honestly, having Stewart back in any capacity on a Starship would be phenomenal!
UPDATE:
Rumours of Stewart’s involvement in the new series have been circulating with the actor himself also hinting at the prospect of his return. Speaking to Red Carpet News TV, he said he hadn’t seen Star Trek Discovery yet, but he “may have good cause to look at it very soon.”
UPDATE ENDED
“There is a very short list of writer-producer-directors that every film and television studio wants to be associated with, and Alex and his Secret Hideout team are always at the top,” said David Stapf, CBS Television Studios president.
“His talent, taste and ability to shepherd a successful project is unparalleled. Alex has done remarkable work for our studio, dating back seven years to the launch of Hawaii Five-0, and we are thrilled that he, Heather [Kadin] and their team will be partnering with us for a long time to come.”
Honestly, while all this sounds interesting, we’re just bouncing at the idea of hearing ‘make is so…’ on the screen again!
